It's a TV Game Show That Takes Place in a Cab!

There’s a show on TV that I watch quite often. It’s called “Cash Cab.” It’s a TV game show that takes place inside of a New York City taxi cab. Riders climb into what looks to be a normal cab. After telling the driver (host and taxi driver, Ben Bailey) where they would like to go, Ben turns on a loud fanfare and an array of lights start to flash on the ceiling of the cab. The ceiling reminds me of the dance floor from that show “Dance Fever.” (Anyone else remember Deney Terrio and Adrian Zmed???)

Anyway, the contestants on Cash Cab are asked random trivia questions. As long as they answer correctly, they earn money for every correct answer. I tell my husband that we need to go to New York City and hunt down the Cash Cab because I think we’d clean up if we were ever on the show. (My husband has a lot of REAL knowledge. You know, like history and geography.  I, on the other hand, know a lot of useless trivia and pop culture stuff.)

But aside from the fun trivia, I love watching the people. The people on the show are regular, every day people. You’ll see business men and women, families, groups of friends, married couples and an occasional single rider. Some look like they live fairly affluent lifestyles. Some obviously don’t. Like any game show you get the range of personalities. There is the laid back, skeptical type all the way to the shrieking, screaming types (gotta love the mute button for those!) I get such a kick out of watching people win on that show. I think to myself, “Here are some people just going about their every day life and BAM! Totally out of the blue they are given this opportunity to make some money! I'll bet when they woke up that morning they never expected something like this would happen!" I think the most I’ve ever seen anyone win was in the $4000 area so it’s not like winning on Jeopardy or anything. But these people weren’t expecting even the smaller scale surprise. They were just on their way to work or out to dinner. An unexpected opportunity.

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I try to find God in unexpected places. I found Him on a quirky game show tonight. Sometimes we go through our every day life just going through the motions. Life goes on day after day. I get up, go to work, come home, spend time with my family or participate in some other activity, and then I go to bed. Nothing special. Just every day life.

Then there are times when I get up... and BAM! totally out of the blue God surprises me with His own version of a fanfare and disco lights. And my reaction? Usually like the contestants on the show—I’m totally stunned. But really, why would I be stunned? Isn't God better than a cab-driving game show host?  I love how “The Message” translates Matthew 7: 7-11 "Don't bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This isn't a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we're in. If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? As bad as you are, you wouldn't think of such a thing. You're at least decent to your own children. So don't you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better?"

So when God blesses me at a time when I don't expect it…I don’t think I should be surprised. Thankful? Yes. Excited? Of course! But not surprised. And what's really cool is that I don't have to go to New York City and hunt God down. He's much more accessible.
