The Need To Talk

Based on some talk research, the building of relationships through talking is a priority in the brain "make-up" of women. A woman can easily speak an average of 6,000-8,000 words a day. She uses an additional 2,000-3,000 sounds, vocally, to communicate, as well as 8,000-10,000 gestures, facial expressions, head movements, and other body language signals. This gives her a daily max of over 20,000 communication "units" to relate her messages.

Contrast a woman's daily "chatter" to that of a man. He speaks just 2,000-4,000 words and 1,000-2,000 vocal sounds, and makes a mere 2,000-3,000 body language signals. His daily average adds up to around 7,000 communication "units"—about one-third of the output of a woman. Interesting.

How would you estimate your personal need to talk? Would you describe it as high or low? And does that correspond to the latest results of talk research? However, there has to be exceptions in both cases one would think. Now, what about listening????? Do we listen with our mouths or do we listen with our ears? Hmmmm..............thoughts?

Re: It's All Talk!

I love to talk and the research fits me perfectly. My husband? He does not like to talk as much so I would say the research fits him perfectly as well. I feel much better when I get all my words out especially with other girlfriends. Listening? I could improve on that. Some days I listen intently, some days I listen like I'm reading cliff notes to a book. I think...ya ya....just give me the short story!
