I Heard It On The Radio - "Do What You Do"

"Hey, don't give em what they want cause they don't have a clue" I heard that from Martina McBride's song lyrics on the radio the other day. Then with her peppy, self confidant voice she said DO WHAT YOU DO. It made me laugh because I realized for the first 20 years of my life, I woke up every day with one goal in mind: to please everyone else.

I thought if I could give an old flame what he wanted, all would be good. I wouldn't learn until later that he didn't have a clue to as what he wanted--for himself or from me.

I also strived to please those I worked for until my late 20's . Thinking that they knew better than me what I should do and how I should do it. I forfeited my ability to discern and reason for myself. I wouldn't learn until later that "higher ups" are sometimes just as clueless, and sometimes more so, than those who deal with the customers and employees every day in the trenches.

I didn't come into my own until my 30's and turning 40 was amazing for me. I finally learned to be me and celebrate who God made me without worrying about what everyone else thought. I really figured some key things out. Until then, I didn't have a clear identity as to who I was. I spent the first half of my life patiently trying to be what others expected or wanted me to be--for the most part trying to be someone I was not.

Arise, shine; for the light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. (Isaiah 60:1)

I have learned that to live a life of uncommon joy, baby, you must do what you do. And that begins with trusting, letting go and letting God do what he needs to do in you.

Quit trying to be everybody else....they are already taken. Do what you do best.....celebrate that.....and the joy will come. My next silly goal is to dance on bubble wrap while wearing high heeled shoes! Why? I don't know--no reason, it just sounds like fun!

Why is it that we have to hit 40 to learn these lessons? I'm two years into my 40's now (shudder, shudder) and I still find myself striving to please people more than I strive to please God. I'm getting better, though. Thank God for that.
